02.13.2015 - Santa Barbara Magazine, Santa Barbara Magazine BEST OF: Food & Wine

Upscale and intimate, INTERMEZZO, 805-966-9463, features temperature-controlled wines on tap and a delightful small menu in a cozy fireplace setting.

10.16.2014 - Santa Barbara Independent, Best of Drinking: Margerum Wines

Doug Margerum from his North County winery couldn't be clearer: "It was definitely M5," he said, referring to the most popular wine he makes. It's not the title of an imaginary intelligence agency; the "M" is for him, but the "5" stands for five grapes it employs — syrah, grenache, mourvèdre, counoise, and cinsault. He was always a Rhône wine buff, beginning with an experience he had drinking there at about the age most other kids are thinking about getting their learner's permit.

"I used to collect Chateauneuf-du-Pape," he said. "Some of these lesser-known grapes would just make you mad if you had wine made exclusively from them. Together, they are magic. It's a staple at bars like Lucky's", said Margerum, and he's thrilled that the readers have such astute collective tastes.

07.25.2014 - Black Dog :: food blog ~ food that will make your tail wag, Wine Cask: Keep it Classy, Santa Barbara.

Do you remember the restaurant, Cafe Luck? That was one of the first restaurants I went when I moved here. What a fond memory I have….until it just disappeared on me without even saying good bye. I remember a few dishes and desserts I loved. I still remember how it tasted. (I have a mean memory on taste). Everytime I pass by the empty/ever changing cafe luck spot, I couldn’t help but wonder where the chef went.

When lovely ladies at JZPR (kick-ass PR folks!) mentioned there is a new chef at WineCask and I briefly saw the line in the email saying Cafe Luck, I had to stop and read the email again. Chef David Rosner. Welcome back. So good to have you back.

06.30.2014 -, Legal Community Kicking Off Food from the Bar Drive to Benefit Foodbank

The Santa Barbara legal community is pleased to announce the kick-off of its fourth annual Food from the Bar Drive from 5:30 to 7 p.m. this upcoming Tuesday, July 1, at the Intermezzo Bar & Café at 819 Anacapa St.

Food from the Bar is a unique opportunity for legal organizations in Santa Barbara to come together to directly improve the lives of local children.

04.14.2014 -, Intermezzo: Dog Friendly

Seasonally influenced menus, a wide variety of wine choices, an elegant setting, and alfresco dining are some of the pluses of this restaurant. Leashed and well mannered dogs up to about 25 pounds are allowed at the outer tables, and they must be able to be under the table-not in the aisles.

02.07.2014 - Santa Barbara Seasons Magazine, Cocktail Corner: Intermezzo's New Lineup of Handcrafted Cocktails

The creative crew at Intermezzo is shaking things up again this month, with a slew of new specialty cocktails to enjoy on a cold rainy day or warm winter afternoon. You never know what to expect weather-wise in February in Santa Barbara, but you can certainly expect these tasty, handcrafted cocktails to hit the spot!

Try the Cherry Bomb, a mix of Caliche rum, lemon, orgeat, egg whites, Brandy Cherry syrup, and Peychaud's bitters. It pairs well with girls night out and the "Mission" flatbread, topped with Fig preserves, Pt. Reyes blue cheese, crispy salami, wild arugula and drizzled with 20 year aged balsamic.

05.03.2013 - Santa Barbara Independent, Sipping "El Salud" at Intermezzo

Just in time to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, the Wine Cask’s Intermezzo bar is unveiling “El Salud,” a special spicy margarita made in honor of 1st District County Supervisor Salud Carbajal.

The idea came from Wine Cask co-proprietor Doug Margerum, who recently ran into Carbajal during the opening ceremonies for the American Riviera Bank in Montecito, where the supervisor expressed some dismay that Mayor Helene Schneider had her own cocktail at Intermezzo and he did not.

"He implored us to make a habanero-infused tequila margarita, which, according Salud, is simply the best margarita,"said Margerum. "Thus, 'El Salud' was born. It's quite good."

11.20.2012 - Santa Barbara Independent, Shake-Ups at Hungry Cat, Cádiz, and Intermezzo

A funny thing happened at a recent open house at Cádiz, held to mark celebrated chef John Pettitt's reworked menu and a fresh bar program conceived by newly recruited mixologist Sean Sepulveda: A head popped out of the kitchen window that I recognized … from the Hungry Cat. Which made me wonder: What else is changing in S.B.'s kitchens? Quite a bit, as it happens. Here's the current shakedown:

Nik Ramirez, sous chef under Brandon Hughes at Wine Cask for the past two years, is ready to fly and, while still maintaining that position, will also step up — and into his own — as chef at a newly expanded Intermezzo. Hawaiian-born Ramirez, who spent time playing semi-pro soccer in Romania and, it's worth noting, bears more than a passing resemblance to Slash, brings a passion for sticking to what's organic and sustainable, an aloha attitude, and an inspired creativity. (See: beer-steamed mussels with truffle-vanilla velouté.) In its expanded space — that includes a big-screen TV — Intermezzo now offers a distinctly more upscale option when you're looking for somewhere to chill while watching, say, the World Series (insert gratuitous Go Giants! here)…

10.28.2012 - Santa Barbara Independent, Intermezzo Expands Its Walls & Menu

With Intermezzo's newly appointed Chef Nik Ramirez now in command of the kitchen, and a recently revamped interior…Intermezzo Bar + Cafe is bigger and better than ever!

Born on the Hawaiian island of Maui, Ramirez was raised on, and gained a love for, local produce. By cooking and creating menus with what the local environment provided, he became accustomed to exercising his creativity on a daily basis. His goals were to use only indigenous plants, fruits and vegetables, in order to help sustain local farmers and markets, and led to his becoming a supporter of organic and sustainable farming.

10.25.2012 -, The Restaurant Guy: Intermezzo Update

Intermezzo at 813 Anacapa Street has expanded the bar-café by opening a wall to the adjoining Riviera Private Dining Room. The eatery also has a newly appointed Chef Nik Ramirez.

10.12.2012 - Fodor's Travel, Where to Drink Wine in Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara is often called the American Riviera. Wave caps sparkle in the Pacific Ocean, which hugs the city of 90,000 people, and red-tiled roofs mimic Mediterranean style. Wine is no exception to the glam and the glitz, with hundreds of award-winning wineries in Santa Barbara's back yard, growing grapes in American Viticultural Areas like Santa Rita Hills and Santa Lucia Highlands. And the movie Sideways, about two guys on a hapless wine-sipping journey through the region, brought even more attention to the region.

03.12.2012 - Dress and Dish, Wine Cask: Intermezzo Santa Barbara

Wine Cask Intermezzo is one of my favorite restaurants in Santa Barbara. Wine Cask is where we had our dinner reception after our wedding. Intermezzo is an extension of the Wine Cask. It is a quaint room with a bar and lounge area. It is ideal for a quick drink and appetizer. Basically it is a mini Wine Cask in a more casual setting. The staff is warm and inviting and the food is phenomenal. We recommend the flat breads, baked shrimp mac n cheese and their burgers with fries. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu here. We had a wonderful time there with our friends John and Sara and a romantic time on another occasion alone. Wine Cask Intermezzo is romantic and group friendly. A fun time had by all!

09.29.2011 - Santa Barbara Independent, Eco-Cool Award: Wine Cask’s Wine-on-Tap Program

With the installation help of Brian Thompson from Telegraph Brewing Company, Wine Cask and Intermezzo now only offer wine by the glass on-tap: less glass, less cork, less cardboard, more wonderful local wines fresh from the wineries.

"I decided to go exclusively to the tap system primarily out of a desire to be a leader in the trend, providing fresh wine in an eco-friendly manner," claims Mitchell Sjerven, co-owner. "I also believe strongly that the quality of wine we are able to get is fantastic due to the desire of our local partners in the wine industry to be a part of such a program."

09.21.2011 - Santa Barbara Independent, Intermezzo: Wine Cask's Casual Chic Eats

One part wine bar, one part Wine Cask compound, Intermezzo is the approachable dining choice compared to its more formal restaurant. The small space is designed as a cozy quick stop for small plates, flatbreads, artisan cocktails, and local wines on tap.

09.09.2011 -, The Restaurant Guy: Flatbread Sunday
